The IACUC reviews all animal use protocols, ensures compliance with federal regulations, inspects animal 设施 and laboratories, and oversees training and educational programs.
The IACUC serves as a resource to faculty, 调查人员, 技术人员, 学生, 工作人员, and administrators and provides guidance for conducting all animal use procedures with 的 highest scientific, 人道的, 道德原则.The IACUC also oversees 的 occupational health and safety program for animal users.
The IACUC is composed of 的 following individuals:

- A minimum of one research scientist, non-scientists community representative, and a student representative
The IACUC makes semiannual inspections of all 设施 and laboratories where animals are housed or utilized. The IACUC meets once per month with two meetings per year (or two additional meetings) designated for lab inspection and twice per year (or two additional meetings) for program review.
The IACUC performs 的 following federally mandated functions:
- Review at least once every six months SPU's program for 人道的 care and use of animals, using 的Guide for 的 Care and Use of Laboratory Animals 作为评价的基础.
- 检查, at least once every six months, all of 的 animal 设施, including animal study areas/satellite 设施, using public health services regulations, 的 United States Department of Agriculture regulations, and 的 Guide for 的 Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 作为评价的基础.
- Prepare reports of IACUC evaluations and submit 的 reports to 的 institutional official (IO).
- Review and investigate legitimate concerns involving 的 care and use of animals at 的 research facility resulting from public complaints and from reports of non-compliance received from facility personnel or employees.
- Make recommendations to 的 IO regarding any aspect of 的 research facility's animal program, 设施, 或者人员培训.
- 审核批准, require modifications in (to secure approval), or withhold approval of those components of proposed activities related to 的 care and use of animals.
- 审核批准, require modifications in (to secure approval), or withhold approval of proposed significant changes regarding 的 care and use of animals in ongoing activities.
- Suspend an activity involving animals when necessary; take corrective action and report to 的 funding agency, 办公室 of Laboratory Animal Welfare, and 的 United States Department of Agriculture
